Sophia's Integer Scribe Post

Integer Addition and Subtraction:

Question 1:
9-1=

1. First you have to write out the question in words, owe = negative ( - )  have = positive ( + or/ numbers without the + ex. 9 )

For this question the sentence would be:
Have 9 Owe 1= 8
( You don't need an "and" but you it makes it easier for you can put one)

2.We have to put into integer chips ( + and - )

This would be:
+++++++++
-

Since there is a zero pair we take those out and then what ever we have left is the answer. Which is 8 chips ( ++++++++ ) Zero pairs are a positive sign (+) with a negative sign (-) like what we have here in the top.

3. We put it in a number line.
                      9
                 ----------->
<_______0______8_______________>

                          <---
                              -1

Question 2:
6+(-7)=

1. Like what we did on the first one we need to put it in a sentence.

Have 6 Owe 7 = Owe 1

2. Put it into integer chips.

++++++
- - - - - - -

There are zero pairs, so we take them out.

3. Put it in a number line
                  6
              -------->
<_____________-1_0____________>
                <----------
                      -7

Question 3:
(-8) + (-3) =

1. Put in sentences ( owe and have )

Owe 8 Owe 3 = Owe 11

2. Integer chips ( - and + )

- - - - - - - -    - - -

In here we have no zero pairs so we just count what we have and that is the answer.
So, that 11 chips.

3. Number line, like the others we put it in a number line.

<________-11____________0_____>
                   <------<---------
                       -3       -8

Question 4:
 9 - (-4) =

1. Put it in sentences:
Have 9 negative Owe 4 = Have 14

You see the bold negative we put that because "To remove what isn't there you must add a zero pair"

2. Integer chips:
Since this question is a bit different than other you have to do a little extra work. As before "To remove what isn't there you must add a zero pair"
Lets start with -(-4):
put into integer chips like so,
- - - -  >>>
++++
Now the negative chips goes away and gets replaced my positive chips.
Then add with positive 9 ( Have 9)
++++++++++ ++++
 which makes positive 14 ( Have 14)

3.Make a Number line.

You cannot make a number line for this question, so you need to show your work by using the integer chips.

Question 5:
(-7) - (-7) =

1. Once again put it in sentences.
Owe 7 negative Owe 7 = 0
 ( remember negative )     :)
( zero is the middle so it doesn't have a positive or negative sign )

2. integer chips:
"To remove what isn't there you must add a zero pair"
 So once again,

- - - - - - -  >>>>>>
+++++++

- - - - - - -
+++++++

Then the zero pairs are taken out. The remaining is 0.

3.Make a Number line.

You cannot make a number line for this question, so you need to show your work by using the integer chips.

Question 6:
3 + 8 = 12

(Repeat what we did )
1. Write it out!
Have 3 Have 8 = Have 12

2. Integer chips!
+++    +++++++++

3.Number line
(make one on your paper)

Question 7:
 0 - 8 =8
(From the top)
1.Write the sentence (owe and have)
0 Owe 8 = Owe 8

2. ( + - )

- - - - - - - - -

3. NUMBER LINE.

Question 8:
(-2) + 3 = 1
1. Sentence:
Owe 2 Have 3= Have 1
2.Chips.
+++
- -
There is a zero pair take it away. You have have positive 1.
3. Numberline.
(make it )

Sophia's Pay It Forward

Part 1:
Pay It Forward is random acts of kindness you do to 3 people. Then those 3 people will do acts of kindness to 3 more people. Then it will repeat to those different people and so on. Those people could be a family, stranger, friend, or just someone you know. Its something you do just because you want to, not to get money or you can do it to maybe make them happy or make their day when they are sad.

Part 2:
My act of kindness was to give thanks for everything I have, so I gave my parents a note and wrote how thankful I was. I chose this activity because it was something I wanted to do and also to make my parents know how much I love them. I guess I helped my parents, to make them smile and to let them brighten their day. What I did was I got a piece of paper and wrote my "thankful" thoughts and given it to my parents. Well, I did this act of kindness today, because I planned this but like hesitant to give it because I was shy.

Part 3:
My act of kindness went well, they were happy about the letter. What happened was they were pleased to read the letter they smiled. It made me feel really happy that they liked it, even if there was no reward I was very happy. Well the reaction of the reading I wasn't really there in their face so.. yeah. but I think they would have cried a little bit. Well I didn't ask them to "pay it forward" because I forgotten, and yeah so I will actually do that.

Part 4:
The idea of Pay it Forward is important because I think people should think about each other more. I think that thinking only about your self makes you quite selfish and well, its nice to give random acts of kindness to people even if you don't know them. It may just be like opening the door for them little as that sounds it makes them happy because well they might of have many things in their hand. I also think that people should care about their people because well, you cant really talk to a monkey or a duck I guess you can be friends with them.?? Has my act of kindness made a difference? Well I don't know if my act of kindness made a difference I guess it would because if someone is happy they would help someone else?

Sophia's Percent Post

A percent is a equivalent number out of 100.

100 percent means everything, 100/100
To find 100 percent you have to divide the equivalent number by 1.

50 percent means 50/100, 1/2, divided by 2, half.
To find 50 percent you have to divide the equivalent number by 2.

25 percent means 25/100, 1/4, quarter, divided by 4.
To find 25 percent you have to divide the equivalent number by 4.

10 percent means 10/100, 1/10, divided by 10.
To find 10 percent you have to divide the equivalent number by 10.

1 percent means 1/100, divided by 100.
To find 1 percent you have to divide the equivalent number by 100.

3)

3) Converting Percents Fractions and Decimal

To convert a fraction to a decimal you have to divide the numerator and the denominator to get a decimal number.
ex. 3/40 = 0.075
3 divided by 40 makes 0.075

Now to convert a decimal to a percent you have to multiply my 100, because percents are out of 100 and also a decimal is out of 1.
ex. 0.075*100 = 7.5 so thats 7.5%
0.075 multiplied by 100 makes 7.5

To convert a percent to a fraction you have to get the decimal which if it was 7.5% you divide that by 100  which makes 0.075. Since the place holder is in the thousandths place we put the denominator 1000 and then 75 on the numerator. Then we divide by 2 to get a equivalent fraction.
ex.
75/1000 divide until we get an equivalent fraction = 3/40

4)
20% of 60
Calculator:

20/100= 0.2        0.2*60=12    therefore 12 is 20 percent of 60

Mental Math:

20% of 60 0.1% of 40

250% of 400

5) Combining Percents

Which is a better deal?
50% off or 25% off of an already reduced price of 25%
 If the price was $60.00

 to get 50 percent you divide 50 by 100 to get the decimal of 50. Then the number will be 0.5, so 0.5 * 60 = 30.00 so 50% of 60.00 is $30.00.

Now 25% of an already reduced price of 25%.
First get 25% of 60
Which will be 25/100 because all percents a out of 100. Then that would be 0.25, 0.25 * 60 = 15 then
 60- 15 = 45.00
Then there will be a new total  which is $45.00 Then repeat what you did before but instead of the 60 which was the old total it will be 45.00 so 45 -15  = 40.00

So now you know 50% is better then 25% off of an already reduced price of 25%.

Discount is what you save
Sale price is what you pay
Total price is what you pay with the taxes
