Angel's Multiplying Integers Scribe Post

One way of figuring out a multiplication integer equation is by using a number line.

For example: 6b) (+3) x (-6)

You first have to make a line with arrows facing outward on both ends and place a zero anywhere on the line.

Next you have to make an arrow going left if it's negative and right if it's positive (in our case it's left) and label it -6.

We do this two more times so we have three groups of -6.

Where the arrow has ended will determine your answer which is -18.

Here is a picture showing all the steps:

Another way of figuring out a multiplication integer equation is by using the sign rule.

For example: 8a) (+10) x (+4)

It is best to first multiply the numerals without thinking about the integers so 10 x 4 = 40.

Now look at your integers. If the two integers are the same, then the product is positive. If the two integers are different, they are negative.

In our equation, the integers are both positives so the answer will be +40.

Now let's do this with different integers.

For example: 8c) (-7) x (+5)

First we multiply the numerals: 7 x 5 = 35

Then we look at the integers and since the two integers are different, the product is negative which means the answer is -35.

Subtracting Integers Scribe Post

When using integers, an easy way to understand the process of adding and subtracting them are by using the words remove, and, owe and have. Remove represents the subtraction sign (-). And represents the addition sign (+). Owe represents negative integers (-4) and have represents positive integers (+4 or 4).

-1 - (-4) =

To solve this equation, it would be best to first write out the equation in words.

owe 1 remove owe 4 =

Next would be to draw the equation using integer chips.
_  _ _ _ _

Now since you cannot subtract negative integers, you must make a zero pair.
_ _ _ _
+ + + +

Now that you have a zero pair, you may now remove the negative integers.

+ + + +

Now all that's left is the 4 positive integers and 1 negative integer.
_
+ + + +

Once again you must remove the zero pairs which will leave you with the answer.

+ + +

-1 - (-4) = 3

Here are the steps altogether.

To know whether it is an addition equation or a subtraction equation, just remember that if 2 subtraction signs are beside each other, it is a subtraction equation.

Here is a video to further understand subtracting integers.

Angel's Pay it Forward

Part 1
"Pay it Forward" is a random act of kindness done towards an individual or a group of people. If by chance he, she or they would like to repay you for your deed, you could instead just tell he, she or they to "Pay it Forward" giving them a chance to do something nice for 1 or more other people.

Part 2
My "Pay it Forward" act of kindness was serving and performing for the seniors at the Betelstadur home. I chose this activity because it was an idea that my friends and I thought of on our own and we thought "Hey! Why not start off their day with a little smile caused by a couple of strangers?" We helped the seniors and did it by getting them cups of coffee and plates of food while they were talking to their neighbours and enjoying the drawings and messages in the Christmas cards we gave them. We did our act of kindness around noon on Christmas Eve.

Part 3
I think our act of kindness went pretty well. We went to the sun room, prepared the food and were gladly welcomed with open arms. After a while of serving them coffee and food, we performed a song for them and were gladly praised. I felt at first relieved that they would take time off their day to come out of their rooms and see what we had prepared for them. Seeing their smiling faces was heart warming and nice. As for their reactions, I was happy to hear that they were amazed that young girls like me are taking time off their day to do something nice for a bunch of strangers without anything in return. We had a speech after our performance telling them the meaning of "Pay it Forward" and encouraging them to pass it on to others. I don't remember their reactions to our request but I hope they consider doing a random act of kindness to another stranger or to someone they know.

Part 4
I think the idea of "Pay it Forward" is important because people are faced with problems everyday and sometimes doing a random act of kindness lightens up their mood helping that person face that problem and also to lighten up another persons mood. I do believe my act of kindness made a difference because it gave them something to remember on a rough day that can make them smile.

Angel's Percent Post

A percent is an equivalent fraction out of 100/100.

100 percent means everything (100/100).
To find 100 percent you divide by 1.

50 percent means half, 1/2 or 50/100.
To find 50 percent you divide by 2.

10 percent means 1/10 or 10/100.
To find 10 percent you divide by 10.

25 percent means 1/4 or 25/100.
To find 25 percent you divide by 4.

1 percent means 1/100.
To find 1 percent you divide by 100.

Converting Percents, Fractions and Decimals

Converting fractions to decimals and percents: 3/40
Numerator divided by denominator.
3 divided by 40 = 0.075/1 x 100/100 = 7.5/100 or 7.5%

Converting decimals to percents and fractions: 0.268
0.268/1 x 100/100 = 26.8/100 or 26.8% 268/1000 divided by 4/4 = 67/250

Converting percents to decimals and fractions.
750%/100 divided by 100/100 = 7.5/1 or 7 1/2

Mental Math

20% of 60
0.1% of 40
250% of 400

Calculator

20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
0.2 x 60 = 12

0.1 ÷ 100 = 0.001
0.001 x 40 = 0.04

250 ÷ 100 = 2.5
2.5 x 400 = 1000

Combining Percents

Discount is what you save.
Sale Price is what you pay.
Total Price with taxes is sale price (what you pay) and taxes altogether.

Original price is what is on the sticker.

Original price: $200
Discount: 50% off

Original price: $200
Discount: 25% off already reduced price of 25%

What's the better deal?

200 ÷ 2 = $100

200 x 0.75 = $150
150 x 0.75 = $112.50

50% off is the better deal. 25% off the already reduced price of 25% doesn't give you the same result because after finding the 25% off the original price. A new total is in play when finding the other 25%.
